FM Es was weak in Northern Virginia on Memorial Day 2013. While several DXers 90-150 miles away had top-of-the-band Es reception, the band here was largely devoid of skip. However, at 6:21 p.m., I had a 15-second fade-up from relog 89.1 KFLO with a local ad in the Shreveport, LA area. The Es was out of FM until 7:28 p.m., when I, by chance, heard an ID from new log 91.5 KSYE, mixing with semi-local 91.5 WBJC from Baltimore, MD @ 56mi as I tuned by its frequency. KSYE came in for about 8 seconds. Finally, at 7:46 p.m., 92.9 KBEZ was in for about 30 seconds before leaving, bringing the opening’s grand total to a 92.9 FM MUF and 53 seconds in FM.
Also to note, today’s opening, the ninth in 2013 so far, has matched the entire amount of openings seen last year. However, so far only 5 new FMs have been logged via Es in 2013, vs. 38 in 2012. Although I’m not saying 2013 will be better and I’m not getting my hopes up, a few good openings later in the season may make Es better year-by-year for the first time locally since 2009. We’ll see.
